A Day in the Antarctic Interior

Fly from Cape Town across the Southern Ocean to Wolf's Fang, White Desert's blue-ice runway in Antarctica. This is a return flight experience into the continent's interior.

The on-ice programme centres on crystal-lined ice caves, glacier abseiling and a celebratory stop at the Ice Bar. White Desert guides lead the activities and adapt the schedule to conditions.

White Desert operates the journey. Waypoint Journeys helps with the booking and Cape Town arrangements. Ask us for current departures and availability, allowing extra time around the trip for weather.

A Runway of Blue Ice, an Ice Cave, and a Toast at the Bottom of the World

A Runway of Blue Ice

Arrive on the blue ice at Wolf's Fang, the gateway to White Desert's Antarctic operation. The flight is part of the experience, crossing the Southern Ocean into the polar landscape.

The Ice Cave

Join the guides inside an Antarctic ice cave to see crystal formations and light filtered through the glacier.

The Glacier Abseil

Descend a frozen glacier face with White Desert’s guides. The team confirms the activity arrangements and suitability for each guest.

Time on the White Continent

Walk on Antarctic ice and take in the surrounding mountains. The programme remains flexible so the guides can respond to conditions.

The Ice Bar

Toast the journey at Wolf's Fang's Ice Bar, carved from Antarctic ice.

Cape Town Both Ends

Attend the Cape Town briefing before flying south. Keep at least two days before departure and two days after the scheduled return available for weather changes.

A Note on Safety & Logistics

There is no crime in Antarctica; the risks are weather, cold and remoteness, and this operation is built around all three. White Desert has flown guests to the interior for two decades, runs its own runway, aircraft, field camps and medical cover, and cancels or delays a flight whenever conditions say so, which is why we ask you to keep two days' slack in Cape Town on either side. The day is spent at the coast-side mountains rather than the high plateau, so altitude is not a factor; the cold is managed with the issued clothing and guides who watch for it, and every activity on the ice is roped, guided and optional. Medical clearance within 30 days and specialist insurance are conditions of travel, and we help arrange both.
