Six Birding Sites, One Remarkable Week

White tail ribbons moving through moss forest. An electric-blue wing at a coffee-garden edge. Golden display plumes lit by the first sun. Around Mount Hagen, the birds change as the road climbs and descends, from cool mountain forest to the warmer Baiyer valley. This private week follows that range of habitats, with time to wait quietly at the places where local guides have been watching the birds.

The week works that altitude ladder site by site. Two nights at Kumul Lodge, where a feeding table draws ribbon-tailed astrapia and brown sicklebill to within a few metres of your coffee, with the moss forest of Magic Mountain a dawn drive away. A night on Mount Rondon, on the ridge above Hagen town. Then the mid-altitude country: forest edge and village gardens at Polga, the Nebilyer valley's coffee and forest patches, and a final full day dropped 1,500 metres down into the Baiyer jungles, the warmest and busiest forest of the week. At every site the spotters are landowners who watch these display trees year round.

This is a private expedition built around your dates and birding interests: one guest, one guide, one vehicle, and early starts chosen for the conditions. Departures can be arranged throughout the year. Tell us your priority species and whether you prefer photography, a longer bird list or unhurried time at a display site; we will shape the week around you.

An Altitude Ladder of Display Trees

The Kumul Feeding Table

At about 2,860 metres, Kumul's feeding table offers unusually accessible views of mountain birds. Ribbon-tailed astrapia and brown sicklebill are among the targets, alongside Brehm's tiger-parrot and other Highlands species. Two nights give you several sessions in changing light, with forest trails close by.

A Different Forest Every Day

Birds of paradise sort themselves by altitude, so the week is built as a ladder: the high moss forest at Kumul and Magic Mountain, the ridge at Mount Rondon, the mid-altitude gardens of Polga and the Nebilyer, and finally the warm jungle of the Baiyer valley, 1,500 metres below the first morning. Six sites, five distinct forests, and a new set of species nearly every day.

Dawn at the Display Posts

Early light is the focus: a calling King of Saxony, a superb bird-of-paradise near its display log, or the Lesser Birds-of-Paradise of the Baiyer valley. Your guide and local spotters choose the morning sites around recent activity, weather and your priorities.

Built for One

This is a private departure for a single guest: your own guide, your own 4WD and driver, and a schedule that answers to the birds and to you. Stay three hours at a lek that is performing, skip a site that is quiet, sleep through an afternoon. Nothing on this itinerary waits for a group, because there is no group.

Landowner Spotters

Local landowners and spotters know the forest patches and display sites that make this route special. We arrange access with them and include site fees, so you can concentrate on watching quietly while your visit supports the people caring for these places.

Your Dates, Your Birding Priorities

A private week can be arranged throughout the year, subject to lodge availability and local conditions. The daily order remains flexible around weather and bird activity, with time to revisit a promising site or spend longer with a species you especially want to photograph.

Up to Kumul Lodge · the feeding table
Arrival day · transfer from Mount Hagen to Kumul Lodge

Meet your guide in Mount Hagen and climb the Highlands Highway towards Kumul Lodge, at about 2,860 metres. Keep warm layers handy as you leave the valley behind. After settling in, spend the afternoon at the feeding table and nearby forest edges, watching for ribbon-tailed astrapia, brown sicklebill, Brehm's tiger-parrot and Belford's melidectes. Over dinner, review your priority birds and the plan for the first early start. Arrival transfers from elsewhere in the Highlands can be arranged when you book.

Day 2
Magic Mountain · the moss forest at dawn
Pre-dawn start · return to Kumul Lodge

Into the vehicle in the dark with a packed breakfast, and out along the ridge to Magic Mountain, whose upper trails run through true moss forest: every trunk padded green, orchids at eye level, cloud drifting through the canopy. This is King of Saxony country. The male calls from the same bare snags morning after morning, a sound like radio interference, with two head wires twice his body length; the landowner knows each snag by name. The superb bird of paradise and crested berrypecker work the same slopes, and the blue-capped ifrit, which carries poison in its feathers, moves through in mixed flocks. Back at Kumul for the afternoon: the table, the lodge trails, or a nap you have earned.

Day 3
Mount Rondon · the ridge above the town
A final Kumul session · overnight on Mount Rondon

One more first light at the feeding table, then down the highway and up the far side of the valley to Mount Rondon, the forested ridge that stands over Hagen town. The mid-montane forest here holds a different cast from Kumul's: Lawes's parotia scratching his dance floor clean, short-tailed paradigalla, the superb again at closer range, and mixed flocks that can take half an hour to pass one spot. We walk the ridge trails through the afternoon and spend the night at the lodge on the mountain, where the lights after dark pull in moths the size of your hand and, some nights, an owlet-nightjar that comes to look at them.

Day 4
Polga · forest edge and village gardens
Forest edges and gardens · overnight in Mount Hagen

Explore the forest edges and gardens around Polga with local spotters. This mix of remnant forest, cultivated plots and flowering trees gives us a different birding setting from the higher ridges. Search patiently for birds-of-paradise where activity has been reported, then follow honeyeaters and mixed flocks through the garden margins. A hosted mumu lunch breaks up the day before another birding session and the return to our Mount Hagen base. The focus throughout is birds and their habitat.

Day 5
The Nebilyer valley · coffee and the blue bird
The Nebilyer valley · return to Mount Hagen

Head into the Nebilyer valley to explore coffee gardens and surviving forest patches with local spotters. Blue bird-of-paradise is a principal target, and we allow time to wait near an active site without disturbing the bird. Between sessions, watch flowering trees and forest edges for other species. Return to Mount Hagen in the afternoon, with the option to adjust a later session if a priority bird has remained elusive.

Lesser bird-of-paradise with golden-white display plumes
Day 6
The Baiyer valley · Lesser Birds-of-Paradise
An early start · warmer foothill forest

Drive north from the Hagen valley into the warmer Baiyer country for a contrasting day of birding. Here we look for Lesser Birds-of-Paradise, whose golden-white flank plumes distinguish them from the orange-red Raggiana. Local spotters guide us to accessible forest and current activity, with time for fruit-doves, kingfishers and other foothill birds along the way. The sites and walking depend on conditions that morning. Return to Mount Hagen for a farewell dinner and a look back through the bird list.

Day 7
Mount Hagen Airport · departure
Airport transfer · flight to Port Moresby

Enjoy a final breakfast and, if the flight time allows, a little garden birding before the drive to Kagamuga, Mount Hagen airport. Fly to Port Moresby, where the expedition ends. We plan connections around the confirmed domestic schedule and allow for weather disruption; an overnight in Port Moresby may be preferable before an international departure. More birding around Varirata National Park, or time on the reefs at Tufi or Kimbe Bay, can be arranged as an extension.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About This Expedition

Yes. This is a private expedition that can be arranged throughout the year, subject to availability and local conditions. Share your preferred dates and priority birds, and we will advise on the route and daily timing. It is a standalone birding trip; no festival departure is required.
Wild birds are never guaranteed. The circuit gives us repeated opportunities in several habitats, with targets including ribbon-tailed astrapia, brown sicklebill, King of Saxony, blue bird-of-paradise and Lesser Birds-of-Paradise. Your guide adapts the sessions to recent sightings, weather and local access rather than promising a fixed species count.
Yes. $4,950 USD covers the whole private week for a single guest: your own guide, your own vehicle and driver, all six nights, every site and landowner fee, and the flight down to Port Moresby at the end. There is no single supplement because the trip is built for one. A second birder shares the vehicle and guide at a lower per-person rate; ask us to quote.
Kumul Lodge sits at about 2,860 metres, so expect cool nights and a slower pace on the first slopes. Forest trails can be muddy, rooty and steep, and birding often starts before dawn. Bring waterproof boots, a headlamp and warm layers. Tell us about your walking preferences so the guide can select suitable sites and rest periods.

A Note on Safety & Logistics

Papua New Guinea needs to be travelled properly, and we will not pretend otherwise. You are met at every airport, driven everywhere in a vehicle we know with a driver we have worked with for years, and never walking around town after dark. In the Highlands the risk to a visitor is not being targeted but the occasional local dispute that closes a road; our guides are from these valleys and know each morning which way to go, and the pre-dawn starts on this itinerary run on roads and land where our landowner hosts are expecting us. Someone in the vehicle always carries a satellite communicator. The other honest warning is weather: mountain mornings can be clear at five and closed in by nine, which is exactly why the itinerary keeps slack afternoons, and why we ask you to leave a comfortable gap before your international flight home rather than a tight one.
